Five Automobiles I Wouldn’t Want To Wreck!

I lead a fairly normal life and have never driven anything really exotic.  I did get to drive a friend’s Jaguar XKE and another friend’s Porsche 911, plus my Dad’s MGB and Porsche 924, but that’s about as fancy as I ever have gotten.

My current work ride is a $500 special, so you can get an idea of my general experiences.

BUT… if I could drive anything I wanted, I surely wouldn’t want to wreck it.  Here’s my top five cars that I don’t want to wreck…

Why a 5th or 6th Generation Honda Civic is a Tuner’s Dream Car

Car-modifying enthusiasts have been huge fans of 5th and 6th generation Honda Civics for many years now, popularity that their follow-up generations still can’t repeat. Up through the turn of the millennium, Civics were renowned by tuners for their double wishbone suspension setup. This design was particularly impressive for the intuitive, responsive handling it enabled, as well as the allowance of camber angle control. Later generations of the Civic were outfitted with more commonplace MacPherson struts which, while certainly completely workable for the typical Civic driver, reduced handling responsiveness and disabled camber angle control. These design decisions have allowed 5th and 6th generation Civics a noted place in the tuning community, one that hasn’t been replicated since. Read More

Redneckery At Its Finest

Blowing up a Big-Block V8

The owner of this engine, a Boss 557 that was headed for a custom Mustang hot rod, says the dyno test had gone well the first six times — despite the use of a flywheel from a smaller stock 427 engine, in place of a tougher piece the owner had left behind. After some tweaks, the engine was generating 850 hp on test number 7 when the flywheel gave way.

And how much damage was done? According to the owner’s post on a Mustang forum, “the flywheel came apart, blew through the block slicing the starter in half. It then went through the wall into the next room hitting a metal cabinet.”

VIDEO: Johnny Greaves jumps stadium truck over 300′ to set world record

Only ten days ago Jonny Greaves jumped his closed-course race truck from one dirt ramp to another — those ramps being separated by close to 300 feet. Greaves ended up going 301 feet, and set the record for the longest ever jump in a 2WD truck. It’s even more fun to watch than to read about, if only because his engine makes his Toyota sound like it’s powered by demons and banshees.
